Seamless Wi-Fi for East Trenean Farm’s Holiday Cottages

About East Trenean Farm

East Trenean Farm is a collection of Four and Five Star Gold luxury holiday cottages, accommodating 2 to 20 guests on a 17th-century Grade II listed farm in peaceful South East Cornwall. Set among rolling hills of medieval farmland and just minutes from Looe and the South West Coast Path, the farm offers hot tubs, cosy fires, private gardens, and flexible bedrooms. With 10 acres of gardens, fields, and stunning valley views, it’s the perfect base for families, couples, and groups to explore Cornwall’s beaches, moors, and local attractions.

Connectivity Challenges

East Trenean Farm’s holiday cottages and farmhouse faced a significant connectivity challenge due to two-foot-thick stone walls, which block Wi-Fi signals and make reliable coverage difficult.

The property accommodates up to 25 guests, many of whom stream, game, video call, or work remotely, so robust and consistent Wi-Fi is essential. The farm relied on legacy access points — A40, A42, and PA1200 units — which struggled to provide seamless coverage across the cottages, shared outdoor areas, and the farmhouse lounge, leaving some “dead spots.”

Devices such as Sonos audio units also had difficulty connecting reliably across the thick walls. With a mix of wired access points and mesh units, the farm needed a modern, high-performance upgrade to deliver strong, uninterrupted Wi-Fi throughout both indoor and outdoor spaces.

The Solution

Utility Networks supplied eleven Plasma Cloud PAX1800v2 access points for installation across the site. The new hardware delivered a significant improvement in signal strength and coverage over the previous generation, even within the thick stone walls.

The mesh configuration of the PAX1800v2 units ensures reliable connectivity throughout the farm. If one unit experiences a problem, the mesh system automatically reroutes connections through another access point. Each unit is plug-and-play with zero configuration, features two Ethernet ports for wired devices, and is free to manage via Plasma Cloud, providing seamless, high-performance connectivity for guests and staff alike.

How Did We Do?

Supplied eleven PAX1800v2 Access Points to deliver reliable Wi-Fi coverage across multiple cottages and outdoor areas.

Improved signal strength and range, outperforming previous access point models even through thick stone walls.

Simplified network layout — one planned mesh extender was no longer needed thanks to the PAX1800v2’s superior performance.

Delivered a mesh-based setup that ensures redundancy and automatic rerouting if a unit fails, maintaining uptime and reliability.

Provided guests with fast, seamless connectivity for streaming, gaming, video calls, and remote work during their stay.

Testimonial

"We recently installed eleven PAX1800v2 access points around our collection of holiday cottages in southeast Cornwall. We found the range of each access point to be much improved over the previous version. Our problem was our 2 foot thick stone walls around the listed farmhouse and our barn conversion cottages. The new access points have much improved reach, to the extent that I have actually removed one of the planned mesh extenders in the new set up, as it was no longer needed. On holiday our guests like to stream, game, video call and even catch up with work sometimes, so a robust Wi-Fi system around our farmstead inside and out is a must. The mesh set up provides great coverage around our farmstead and we know if one unit has a problem the mesh will sort out an alternative connection too."
